Trial Attorney – Environmental Torts Litigation

About the role

The Environmental Torts Section of the Civil Division at the U.S. Department of Justice handles high‑stakes civil litigation involving alleged exposure to environmental contaminants. As a Trial Attorney you will lead complex mass‑tort and multidistrict cases on behalf of the United States.

Key responsibilities

• Manage all phases of wrongful death, personal injury, and property damage litigation arising from environmental exposures.
• Litigate mass‑tort actions such as per‑fluorinated compound claims, Flint water crisis injuries, East Palestine train derailment damages, Red Hill jet fuel leaks, and Hunters Point contamination.
• Develop case‑management strategies, address jurisdictional challenges, and coordinate with expert witnesses.
• Prepare and present motions, conduct trials, and negotiate settlements in federal courts nationwide.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen or national with ability to pass a background investigation and drug test.
• Male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with the Selective Service or qualify for exemption.
• May require a two‑year trial period and eligibility for a Top Secret clearance with SCI access.
• Must disclose financial information in accordance with DOJ ethics guidelines.
• J.D. degree and a current license to practice law in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
