WASH Assistant – Garissa (National)

About the role

The WASH Assistant will support the WASH Officer in delivering quality water, sanitation and hygiene programmes across Garissa and surrounding counties. The role focuses on emergency response, construction of WASH infrastructure, hygiene promotion and integration with other sectors such as health, nutrition and child protection.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise construction, rehabilitation and solarisation of WASH facilities (boreholes, tanks, reticulation systems, animal troughs).
• Organise and lead hygiene promotion activities and distribution of WASH non‑food items (jerricans, buckets, soap, PUR, Aquatabs).
• Monitor contractor performance, validate quality of work and coordinate payments with logistics and administration.
• Maintain documentation, capture success stories and produce weekly data reports on beneficiaries and activities.
• Ensure gender, child protection, HIV, environment and other cross‑cutting issues are integrated into all WASH activities.

Required profile

• Degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, Public Health or Sanitation.
• Minimum 2 years experience in WASH infrastructure construction in humanitarian or development settings.
• Proven project management experience, including budgeting, timelines and community participation.
• Strong written and spoken English; ability to communicate in Kiswahili and/or Somali.
• Commitment to Save the Children’s child‑focused mandate and ability to work in insecure, flexible field conditions.
