Assistant Fire Chief of Operations

About the role

The Assistant Fire Chief of Operations will lead the Fire and Emergency Services department on Diego Garcia, ensuring operational readiness, compliance with fire safety standards, and effective emergency response for U.S. Navy operations.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership and management for fire department operations, including firefighting, rescue, and emergency response.
• Lead fire prevention efforts such as inspections, compliance assessments, and community outreach.
• Develop and implement emergency action plans and ensure readiness for various scenarios.
• Supervise fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, and other emergency operations.
• Schedule personnel assignments, manage training programs, and maintain certifications.
• Assist in budgeting for equipment, supplies, and personnel needs.
• Conduct risk assessments and ensure fire safety systems are inspected and operational.
• Maintain accurate incident reports, operational data, and training records.
• Act as liaison between local, municipal, and military stakeholders.

Required profile

• Minimum three years leading a fire prevention section or division of similar size.
• Certification as Assistant Chief of Operations, Fire Inspector III, and Plans Examiner I.
• Ability to complete NFPA 101 Life Safety Course within two years of employment.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Demonstrated operational leadership, team building, and emergency response management.
• Pass contract medical requirements and maintain deployment compliance.
• Valid passport (minimum one year) and ability to obtain required visas.

Required skills

• Knowledge of NFPA, DoD, and Navy fire prevention regulations.
• Experience with emergency action plan development and implementation.
• Ability to conduct fire safety inspections and risk assessments.
• Proficiency in budgeting and resource management for fire services.
