Biomedical Engineering Consultant

About the role

The United Nations Joint Medical Service in Nairobi is seeking a Biomedical Engineering Consultant to ensure that biomedical equipment across Nairobi, Dadaab and Kakuma is safe, functional and well‑maintained throughout its lifecycle. The consultant will lead inventory updates, preventive maintenance, calibration, and support procurement and training activities for the new clinic facility.

Key responsibilities

• Assess, install, maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot and monitor biomedical equipment at JMS facilities in Nairobi, Dadaab and Kakuma.
• Conduct comprehensive equipment inventories, evaluate functionality, safety and utilization, and recommend repairs, replacements, upgrades or disposal.
• Develop and implement risk‑based preventive maintenance schedules and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
• Provide technical advice on equipment specifications, support the procurement team in drafting technical requirements, evaluating proposals and conducting acceptance testing.
• Train healthcare personnel on proper use, care and basic maintenance of biomedical equipment.
• Prepare periodic and final reports, including inventory databases, maintenance plans, procurement recommendations and long‑term equipment management strategies.

Required profile

• High School Diploma with supplemental training in Biomedical Engineering or a related field.
• Minimum seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in biomedical engineering, focusing on installation, maintenance and calibration of medical equipment.
• Local appointment basis for the United Nations Office at Nairobi.
