Chief of Section, Audit

About the role

The Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) seeks a senior audit professional to lead its African Audit Section. Reporting to the Chief of Service in New York, the Chief of Section will shape audit strategy, manage teams, and ensure high‑quality oversight across United Nations entities.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee annual risk assessments for a portfolio of UN clients and maintain up‑to‑date risk registers.
• Develop and implement medium‑ and long‑term goals, annual work plans, and audit schedules for the Section.
• Plan, organize, direct, and coordinate multiple concurrent audit and advisory engagements.
• Manage human and financial resources, define audit scopes, and ensure compliance with OIOS standards.
• Review working papers, audit reports, and engagement communications.
• Lead complex, sensitive audits and provide technical guidance to staff.
• Analyze data, identify trends, and support data‑driven decision‑making.
• Monitor implementation of audit recommendations and liaise with internal audit functions of other UN bodies.
• Maintain positive relationships with auditees and other oversight entities.

Required profile

• Extensive knowledge of UN auditing standards, internal audit practices, and financial rules.
• Proven experience managing audit teams and large‑scale audit programmes.
• Strong leadership ability to empower staff and drive results within budget.
• Excellent analytical skills for risk assessment and data analysis.
• Ability to communicate effectively with senior UN officials and external partners.
