Data Engineer

About the role

The Data Engineer will be a key contributor to Standard Bank Group’s data strategy, designing, building and maintaining a robust, scalable, and secure data infrastructure. This role supports business intelligence, regulatory reporting, advanced analytics and machine‑learning initiatives across the bank.

Key responsibilities

• Design and construct data pipelines that move high‑quality data from source systems to consumption layers.
• Maintain and optimise relational databases and big‑data platforms.
• Ensure data flows comply with financial regulations and internal governance standards.
• Collaborate with analytics, reporting and machine‑learning teams to enable data‑driven solutions.
• Implement ETL scheduling, orchestration and monitoring using tools such as Airflow.

Required profile

• First‑degree qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or a related quantitative field.
• 5‑7 years of professional experience in data engineering or a similar role.
• Strong understanding of data integrity, version control and stakeholder management.

Required skills

• Expert proficiency in SQL.
• Programming in Python or Scala.
• Experience with Apache Spark and Apache Kafka.
• Hands‑on experience with a major cloud platform (AWS, Azure or GCP).
• Knowledge of data‑warehousing concepts and ETL tools, including Airflow.
• Proficiency with Git for version control.
• Experience using Power BI for data modelling and analytics consumption.
