Data Manager - Kisumu

About the role

KEMRI, the Kenya Medical Research Institute, is hiring a Data Manager based in Kisumu. The role covers the full data lifecycle of studies, from designing data collection tools and databases to statistical analysis, reporting and data governance.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, review and maintain data collection tools, databases and electronic data capture platforms (ODK, REDCap, Epi Info, Excel and others), including database creation, testing and maintenance.
• Develop, implement and ensure adherence to study protocols, SOPs, Data Management Plans and other documentation, including CRF design.
• Oversee data collection, entry, cleaning, validation, reconciliation and secure storage, resolving discrepancies promptly.
• Develop Statistical Analysis Plans aligned with study objectives, protocols and regulatory requirements.
• Analyze complex datasets (longitudinal, cohort, multilevel) using appropriate statistical methods and programming.
• Implement data governance and security practices, including access controls, backups and compliance with the Data Protection Act.
• Create dashboards, visualizations and reports in Power BI, Tableau and Excel, and prepare daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, DSMB, sponsor and regulatory reports.
• Contribute to scientific outputs such as abstracts, manuscripts and presentations, and support regulatory and scientific submissions.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology or a related field.
• Good communication skills.
• Experience managing and analysing large amounts of data, especially repeat cross-sectional surveys or longitudinal data.
• Ability to prioritize, work under deadlines, work with minimal supervision and multitask.
• Knowledge of public health, epidemiology and surveillance concepts.

Required skills

• Proficiency in at least one analysis and data cleaning package (SAS, STATA, R, SPSS); use of a package is an added advantage.
• Statistical analysis and data visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, REDCap and Epi Info.
