Deputy CTO – AI Product (Remote, Kenya)

About the role

This is a high‑impact technical leadership position at the intersection of engineering, architecture, and AI product execution. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will act as the right‑hand for backend and machine‑learning teams while staying hands‑on in development and delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Represent technical leadership across backend and ML teams, ensuring continuity of vision and execution.
• Own end‑to‑end system architecture and technical decisions for product features, guaranteeing scalability, performance, and reliability.
• Write production code, ship features, and build prototypes to validate solutions.
• Translate business challenges into technical execution plans and lead small focused teams (5‑10 engineers) from concept to delivery.
• Drive people operations including hiring, off‑boarding, resourcing, compensation input, and team coordination.
• Align cross‑functional stakeholders on technical and product priorities.
• Oversee infrastructure and operational responsibilities to keep systems robust and maintainable.

Required profile

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with a strong backend focus.
• Proven senior technical leadership or management experience while remaining hands‑on.
• Solid business acumen and ability to connect technical decisions to product outcomes.
• Demonstrated people‑management experience (hiring, team leadership, resource allocation).
• Startup mindset with comfort in fast‑paced, small‑team environments.
• Excellent communication, structured thinking, and willingness to articulate uncertainty.
