Deputy Head Academic – Prep School Leadership

About the role

The Deputy Head Academic is a key member of the Prep Senior Leadership Team, responsible for leading and managing the day‑to‑day academic provision of the Prep School and promoting excellence in teaching and learning.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee curriculum, assessment and pupil progress from Little Durham to Year 6, ensuring clear progression and effective transition into Senior School.
• Lead curriculum development, use of assessment data, professional learning and capacity‑building for middle leaders.
• Collaborate with the Head of Prep, Year Group Leads, Learning Enrichment Team and teaching staff to maintain high academic standards.

Required profile

• UK Honours degree or equivalent and a recognised teaching qualification.
• Teaching experience in the primary age range with deep understanding of early years and primary learning development.
• Proven middle or senior leadership experience, able to inspire and develop colleagues.
• Strong knowledge of curriculum development, assessment, effective pedagogy and data‑driven improvement.
• Excellent organisational skills, strategic thinking and day‑to‑day academic leadership.
• Confidence in using digital technologies to support teaching, learning and academic systems.
• NPQH or relevant postgraduate qualification is advantageous.
