Dive Safety Officer

About the role

The U.S. Geological Survey is seeking a Dive Safety Officer to lead and oversee scientific diving operations across its offices. This senior‑level position is based at a USGS office of the incumbent’s choice and requires on‑site presence.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare new or revised standards, policies, guidance, training, and procedures for USGS scientific diving missions.
• Develop and deliver training that meets the needs of USGS scientific divers.
• Provide technical scientific diving expertise and assistance for underwater research.
• Collaborate with regional dive leads, dive groups, and partners to ensure safe dive operations.
• Serve as the senior USGS Dive Safety Officer, an authorized USGS diver, and Chair of the Dive Safety Board.
• Conduct independent external safety audits of dive safety programs and document findings.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship with proof required.
• Pass a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
• Males born after 12‑31‑1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
• Accept a one‑year probationary period during which performance and public‑interest fit are evaluated.
• Be prepared to travel up to five overnight nights per month.
• Obtain a government charge card and participate in direct deposit.
• Successfully complete the E‑Verify employment verification check.
