Legal Counsel – Kisumu

About the role

The Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Kenya seeks a Legal Counsel to provide high‑quality legal representation, advice and legal‑aid services to women and girls in Kisumu. The role supports strategic litigation, advocacy initiatives and strengthens alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to further gender‑justice objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and free legal‑aid services to clients in line with FIDA‑Kenya’s mandate.
• Represent clients before courts, tribunals and quasi‑judicial bodies.
• Draft pleadings, affidavits, submissions, witness statements and other legal documents.
• Conduct legal research and deliver sound legal opinions.
• Support and manage strategic litigation aimed at advancing women’s rights.
• Maintain an assigned litigation portfolio, ensuring timely case progression and accurate record‑keeping.

Required profile

• LL.B degree from a recognised university.
• Post‑graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
• Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a current practising certificate.
• Member of the Law Society of Kenya in good standing.
• At least 2 years of post‑admission legal experience, including litigation and advisory work.
• Experience in gender justice, human rights, family law, succession, children’s rights or public‑interest litigation is an advantage.
• Training in mediation or alternative dispute resolution is desirable.
