Legal Officer

About the role

The Legal Officer will join the Legal Unit of UNEP's Corporate Services Division in Nairobi, reporting to the Senior Legal Officer. The role provides comprehensive legal support to UNEP entities, partners and internal units across a range of environmental and administrative matters.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice to UNEP entities and multilateral environmental agreement secretariats on UN legal and regulatory frameworks.
• Draft, review and negotiate memoranda of understanding, agreements, contracts and partnership arrangements with Member States, NGOs, UN bodies, private‑sector and academic institutions.
• Advise on partner due‑diligence, intellectual‑property issues, procurement contracts and broader human‑resources and administrative law matters.
• Represent UNEP in UN internal justice proceedings, preparing submissions, motions, legal replies and settlement agreements.
• Support the UNEP Partnership Committee by interpreting and implementing partnership policies and procedures.
• Advise on legal aspects of sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment and OIOS investigations, and develop related awareness and training initiatives.
