Legal Officer - Legal Claims & Recoveries

About the role

Takaful Insurance of Africa, a Takaful company operating in line with Shari'ah and Insurance Regulatory Authority regulations, is hiring two Legal Officers to support its Legal Claims department in Nairobi. The Legal Officer manages insurance claims-related legal matters, coordinates with insureds and external advocates, monitors court cases, prepares legal opinions and reports, facilitates court judgments and helps recover amounts due. The position reports to the Assistant Manager – Legal Claims.

Key responsibilities

• Liaise with insureds to submit claim documents and appoint external advocates, sharing correspondence on each claim
• Maintain registers of advocate appointments and track court progress
• Prepare documents such as statements and affidavits before court hearings
• Review ongoing cases and advise management, and prepare legal opinions and reports
• Ensure judgments are processed for payment within internal turnaround time
• Assist in instituting legal proceedings to recover from third parties and initiate out-of-court settlements where appropriate
• Keep accurate case records and update the system; review reserves with the Assistant Manager's approval

Required profile

• Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized university
• Advocate of the High Court
• Minimum of 3 years of work experience, including at least 2 years in insurance or in a law firm handling insurance litigation and claims advisory
• Certified Public Secretary (CPS-K) is an added advantage
