Manager, Database Administration

About the role

SBM Bank is hiring a Manager, Database Administration in Kisumu. The role ensures the high availability (24/7) of the bank's database infrastructure and covers design, administration, security, backup and recovery, licensing compliance and vendor management of database systems.

Key responsibilities

• Install, configure, upgrade and tune database systems, resolving failures and outages quickly
• Manage user accounts, credentials, permissions, access rights and storage allocations
• Develop and run backup and recovery plans, confirm daily backups succeed and check disk space
• Secure the database from breaches and viruses, and take part in risk-mitigation planning and BCP strategies
• Maintain the database asset inventory and ensure compliance of database licenses, renewing them on time
• Liaise with external suppliers and vendors, review contracts and negotiate cost-effective services
• Monitor the system daily, test scripts before deployment and approve, schedule and supervise new database installations
• Train users, develop procedures, manuals and reports (including CBK reports), and lead the team
• Perform change management risk and post-implementation reviews, follow audit findings and prepare documentation

Required profile

• University degree in Computer Science or an IT-related field; a Master's degree in IT is an advantage
• A minimum of 6 years of proven experience as a System Administrator or similar role
• Fluency in spoken and written English
• Good integrity, strong communication, writing and problem-solving skills

Required skills

• Expert DBA skills with Oracle RAC and Oracle database certifications
• Certifications such as MCSE, MCSA, RHCSA/RHCE, VMware Data Center Virtualization and Oracle Linux
• Databases (MSSQL and Oracle), LAN/WAN networks, SAN storage and patch management
• VMware, Kubernetes and Docker awareness
• Knowledge of CIS standards and system security (e.g. intrusion detection)
