Medical Officer – Hospital Team Leader

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is hiring a Medical Officer to provide quality health care to all patients in its hospital. Working closely with nurses, laboratory and pharmacy staff and health post personnel, the Medical Officer acts as team leader and ensures all services run smoothly across the wards.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the hospital, ensure all patients are attended to daily and that every ward runs effectively
• Supervise staff in each ward and conduct daily ward rounds in maternity, medical, pediatrics and isolation wards
• Care for all emergencies, medical and surgical, and carry out elective and emergency obstetric/gynaecological and surgical cases in theatre
• Run weekly special clinics (SOPC, GOPC, HRC, MOPC, POPC) and lead death audit sessions to improve quality of care
• Document patient care, diagnoses, treatment plans and referrals properly; refer patients promptly to secondary and tertiary care
• Handle medical legal cases, including filling P3 forms and attending court sessions, and ensure survivors of sexual assault are attended to in the GBV centre
• Act as team leader, attend clinical staff meetings, update colleagues on patient care, and coordinate Continuous Medical Education (CME)
• Work on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and report to the Medical Officer In-Charge

Required profile

• Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB)
• Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board
• At least 2 years of experience in a busy hospital
• Able to work with minimal supervision
• Flexible, a team player and able to handle a challenging, multitasking environment

Required skills

• Computer literacy in MS Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint is desired
• Adherence to IRC professional standards (Integrity, Service, Equality, Accountability)
