Medical Officer

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is hiring a Medical Officer in Kakuma. The officer provides quality health care to all patients in the hospital and works closely with nurses, laboratory, pharmacy and health post staff as team leader to make sure all services are offered.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the hospital, run it effectively across all wards and supervise staff in each ward
• Ensure all patients are attended to daily, including emergencies (medical and surgical)
• Carry out elective and emergency obstetric/gynaecological and surgical cases in theatre, and lead death audits to improve quality of care
• Run special clinics weekly (SOPC, GOPC, HRC, MOPC, POPC) and attend morning handovers
• Document patient care, diagnoses and treatment plans properly in patient files
• Handle medical legal cases, fill P3 forms and attend court sessions when needed
• Ensure survivors of sexual assault are attended to promptly in the GBV centre and that referrals to secondary and tertiary care are made quickly
• Act as team leader, attend clinical staff meetings, update colleagues on patient care, and coordinate continuous medical education
• Act as doctor on call on a weekly basis, 24 hours a day, seven days a week
• Report to the Medical Officer In-Charge or their designate and carry out other duties assigned by the supervisor

Required profile

• Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB)
• Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board
• At least 2 years of experience in a busy hospital
• Able to work with minimal supervision
• Flexible, a team player and able to handle a challenging, multitasking environment

Required skills

• Computer literacy in MS Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint is desired
• Adherence to IRC's professional standards (Integrity, Service, Equality, Accountability)
