Ophthalmic Care Nurse – Locum

About the role

The Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu is seeking a qualified Ophthalmic Care Nurse on a locum basis to deliver high‑quality nursing care for patients with diverse eye conditions. The role involves supporting ophthalmologists in both outpatient clinics and peri‑operative settings, ensuring patient safety and education throughout the care pathway.

Key responsibilities

• Provide specialized nursing care to patients with ocular conditions in clinic and procedural areas.
• Assist ophthalmologists during diagnostic and minor surgical procedures such as slit‑lamp examinations, visual field tests, and intravitreal injections.
• Prepare patients for ophthalmic procedures and deliver pre‑ and post‑operative care.
• Conduct and document visual acuity assessments and basic eye examinations.
• Administer ophthalmic medications and monitor patient responses.
• Educate patients and families on eye‑care practices, treatment plans, and medication use.
• Maintain infection prevention and control standards and ensure proper handling of ophthalmic equipment.
• Participate in quality‑improvement initiatives and continuing nursing education activities.

Required profile

• Diploma in KRN, KRCHN, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized institution.
• Valid nursing practice license.
• Minimum three years of acute‑care hospital experience, including at least one year in an eye‑care clinic.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
