PhD Scholar – Rapid Cycling and Predictive Breeding

About the role

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is seeking a PhD scholar to investigate rapid cycling and AI‑assisted breeding in dryland crops. The research will evaluate whether early‑generation recycling and genomic prediction can accelerate genetic gain and improve the delivery of climate‑resilient varieties.

Key responsibilities

• Design and execute a PhD research plan focused on rapid cycling and predictive breeding hypotheses.
• Conduct field experiments comparing predicted performance with observed outcomes.
• Perform statistical and quantitative genetic analyses to assess model accuracy and genetic gain.
• Collaborate with project teams to integrate AI and genomic tools into breeding pipelines.
• Document findings and contribute to scientific publications and project reports.

Required profile

• Enrolled or eligible for enrollment in a PhD program in plant breeding, genetics, agronomy, or a related field.
• Strong interest in dryland agriculture and climate‑resilient crop improvement.
• Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary research team.

Required skills

• Knowledge of genomic prediction and quantitative genetics concepts.
• Experience with statistical analysis and data visualization.
