Principal Advisor, Policy and Government Engagement

About the role

The Principal Advisor will lead government engagement for LEEP’s pilots targeting new sources of lead exposure such as spices, traditional eyeliners and other emerging risks. You will work across multiple low‑ and middle‑income countries, shaping policy, building senior relationships and driving regulatory change.

Key responsibilities

• Map policy landscapes in target countries, identifying decision‑makers and opportunities for change.
• Establish and maintain trusted relationships with ministers, senior officials, regulators and standards bodies.
• Lead governments from initial engagement through to the introduction, strengthening or enforcement of regulations on lead‑containing products.
• Test and adapt LEEP’s theory of change for each source, advising on the most effective levers.
• Select and deploy tools such as direct engagement, coalition‑building, media campaigns or grant‑making, managing budget to catalyse action.
• Document successful approaches to build a playbook for country teams and future programs.

Required profile

• Typically 15+ years of experience in policy advocacy, government engagement, diplomacy, public affairs or international development.
• Proven track record of achieving policy, regulatory or enforcement change in low‑ and middle‑income countries.
• Strong political judgement and ability to quickly identify decision‑makers and motivations.
• Demonstrated skill in rapid senior‑level relationship building.
• Strategic flexibility to choose appropriate tools for each context.
• Comfort operating with high autonomy and ambiguity.
