Principal Legal Officer

About the role

The Bandari Maritime Academy is recruiting a Principal Legal Officer based in Nairobi (Westlands). The post is permanent and pensionable, reporting to the Corporation Secretary and the Head of Legal Services. The basic salary scale is Kshs. 89,000 to 206,400 per month, with a house allowance of Kshs. 25,000, a commuter allowance of Kshs. 16,000 and a leave allowance of Kshs. 6,000.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare legal briefs and opinions, interpret legal issues and follow up on compliance with statutory requirements.
• Draft contracts, leases, memorandums of understanding and other legal documents.
• Represent the academy in litigation and other legal matters, and prepare case files for hearing.
• Maintain case registers and files, and follow up on the legal status of the academy's assets, liabilities and claims.
• Identify issues and areas for legal review, review legal documents and safeguard the academy's interests in all legal matters.
• Liaise with the Attorney General's Office, undertake research on specific legal areas and prepare reports.

Required profile

• Cumulative six years of relevant work experience, including three years at the level of Senior Legal Officer or a comparable position.
• Bachelor's degree in Laws (LLB) from a recognized institution and a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
• Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and member of the Law Society of Kenya.
• Management course of at least four weeks from a recognized institution.

Required skills

• Proficiency in computer application skills.
