Public Works Director / Chief Engineer (Diego Garcia)

About the role

Amentum is seeking a seasoned Public Works Director / Chief Engineer to lead the operation, maintenance, and management of public works systems for a critical U.S. Navy program on Diego Garcia. The role ensures infrastructure compliance with government and contractual standards while driving efficiency and reliability.

Key responsibilities

• Direct daily operations of the Public Works Department, overseeing utilities, facilities, roads, and infrastructure.
• Develop and enforce policies, procedures, and schedules for operation, maintenance, and repair.
• Manage engineering and maintenance programs, including environmental initiatives and system upgrades.
• Allocate resources—labor, materials, equipment—to meet contract performance and operational priorities.
• Monitor budgets and ensure financial compliance for all public works projects.
• Coordinate engineering designs, technical solutions, and construction activities for infrastructure improvements.
• Ensure health, safety, and environmental compliance with local, U.S., and contractual regulations.
• Supervise, mentor, and develop Public Works staff to achieve high performance.
• Prepare and present operational and project status reports to leadership and government stakeholders.
• Serve as primary liaison with clients and government representatives on technical matters.
• Lead emergency response and contingency planning for operational disruptions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 8‑10 years of progressive experience in public works operations, infrastructure management, or facilities maintenance.
• Proven leadership managing large technical teams, preferably in a government‑contracting environment.
• Comprehensive knowledge of public works systems, including utilities, roads, buildings, and environmental infrastructure.
• Strong project management experience, including schedule and budget control.
