Scientist - Governance and Trade (FLEGT)

About the role

ICRAF (World Agroforestry Centre) is hiring a Scientist for its Governance and Trade (FLEGT) programme in Nairobi, Westlands. The role provides scientific guidance on research and collaborates with theme coordinators and leaders within CIFOR to define and implement research activities in emerging areas.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance so that research concepts and methods meet the highest scientific standards and reflect up-to-date methods.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators/leaders to define and implement research activities.
• Write and supervise publications and other scientific communications.
• Lead or supervise project capacity-building initiatives.
• Supervise students and staff and mentor junior project scientists.
• Represent CIFOR, when appropriate, in national, regional and global forums on forest governance.
• Maintain constructive partnerships with stakeholders.
• Lead the search for additional funding and lead, coordinate or contribute to donor reporting.
• Plan and monitor research activities, including financing, as necessary.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline.
• Experience in collaborative natural resource management or social science research.
• Publications record, especially in peer-reviewed publications (required).
• Demonstrated experience in resource mobilization, fundraising and proposal writing; for scientist positions, conceptual leadership in fundraising and a track record of securing donor funding.
• Fluent spoken and written English; an international language is an advantage.
• Experience working with multiple partners and in multicultural, multidisciplinary research teams, including research and fieldwork in developing countries.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

More senior positions also require the ability to manage projects simultaneously, expertise across regions and countries, and experience developing budgets and managing budgets on multiple projects.
