Senior Software Engineer (Backend Node.js)

About the role

Deimos is a cloud-native developer and security operations technology services company, a fully remote African-based team of engineers. It is looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to join its engineering team, working within a high-performing backend competency area. The engineer sets and implements standards that enable efficient delivery of high-quality, highly available APIs and services, works in a cross-functional team and reports to an Engineering Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain the API infrastructure, services and systems behind high-traffic, consumer-facing client applications.
• Collaborate with Product, Frontend, UX and other engineering stakeholders on requirements, implementation, process improvements and domain analysis.
• Build backend services focused on quality through testing, automation and code review.
• Analyse systems for performance bottlenecks and opportunities for better scalability, reliability and customer experience.
• Write idiomatic, maintainable code, debug and resolve production issues, and improve standards, tooling and processes.

Required profile

• At least 5 years of professional experience building backend services for production systems.
• Extensive, idiomatic Node.js experience, including large, highly available APIs and services.
• Strong understanding of the RESTful API paradigm; GraphQL and event-driven architectures are a plus.
• Solid relational database experience, especially MySQL or PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimisation and indexing.
• Thorough understanding of automated testing (unit, integration and end-to-end).
• Experience deploying and operating services on AWS and/or Google Cloud, including Docker and Kubernetes.
• Agile development and CI/CD experience, and good working knowledge of Git.
• Based in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa or Senegal.
