Senior Software Engineer (Digital Health Platform)
Living Goods · Nairobi
Job description
About the role
Living Goods builds a digital health platform used by Community Health Workers in Kenya, Uganda and Burkina Faso, and is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join its Global Software Engineering team in Nairobi. This is a senior individual-contributor role with team leadership: roughly 70% of your time is spent building and 30% leading, and you will own a product area end to end.
Key responsibilities
- Set the technical direction of your product area, including architecture and design, and mentor a team of two to four engineers through code review, pairing and structured feedback.
- Lead the offline-first Android mobile application used by health workers and supervisors, and FHIR-native backend services in Kotlin, Spring Boot, Node.js and TypeScript.
- Ensure data integrity (sync conflict resolution, append-only records) and protect clinical and personal data in line with Kenya's Data Protection Act.
- Extend the platform across countries through configuration rather than forks, and ship features end to end, including field support.
- Represent engineering with product managers, programme teams and Ministry of Health stakeholders, and contribute to hiring, onboarding and engineering standards.
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, IT, Software Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7+ years of professional software development, including at least 2 years leading a team or being the senior engineer others depended on.
- Proven track record of shipping and maintaining production software, and of mentoring engineers.
- Experience with open-source digital health tools such as FHIR/HL7, CHT, DHIS2, OpenMRS, OpenSRP, CommCare or OpenLMIS is strongly preferred; LLM and WhatsApp/SMS integration is a plus.
- Working French is an advantage.
Required skills
- Depth in either the JVM (Kotlin or Java) or TypeScript and Node.js, with willingness to work across both.
- Relational data modelling, schema migration, API design, Git, code review and CI/CD.
- JIRA and Confluence strongly preferred.
- MVC, ORM, RESTful APIs, databases, cloud and containerised hosting.
What we offer
- A competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience.
- Health insurance and a bonus opportunity.
