Trial Attorney (Civil Litigation)

About the role

The Civil Division seeks a qualified Trial Attorney to support litigation and policy matters. This full‑time, on‑site position requires a U.S. citizen who can obtain a Top Secret clearance and work five days a week.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct legal research and analysis of statutes, regulations, and case law.
• Draft memoranda, briefs, motions, pleadings, and other court documents.
• Assist in the development, preparation, and handling of litigation matters.
• Participate in hearings, conferences, negotiations, and related activities.
• Collaborate with client agencies, department leadership, and other stakeholders on litigation and policy issues.
• Review factual records, evidence, and legal issues to support case strategy.
• Perform additional duties supporting the Civil Division’s mission.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen or national; must pass a background investigation and drug test.
• J.D. or equivalent degree and active bar membership in good standing.
• For GS‑11: up to 1 year of legal experience; for GS‑12: at least 1 year post‑J.D. experience.
• May need to complete a 2‑year trial period and obtain Top Secret/SCI clearance.
• Must disclose financial information per DOJ ethics guidelines.
