Trial Attorney – First Chair Litigation (National Courts)

About the role

The National Courts Section seeks experienced litigators to serve as first‑chair trial and appellate attorneys representing the United States. You will manage complex cases from investigation through trial and appeal, working directly with federal client agencies.

Key responsibilities

• Lead trial and appellate matters in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and the U.S. Court of International Trade.
• Conduct fact investigations, coordinate expert witnesses, and manage discovery.
• Take and defend depositions, draft substantive and procedural briefs, and present oral arguments.
• Handle appeals in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and other federal courts.
• Lead alternative dispute resolution proceedings and settlement negotiations.
• Collaborate on larger trial teams while maintaining primary responsibility for case strategy.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen or national with ability to pass a background investigation and drug test.
• J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
• Minimum four years of post‑J.D. legal experience for GS‑15 level.
• Willingness to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility, if required.
• Ability to work onsite at any Department duty location nationwide.
