Underwriter – Specialty Business

About the role

Old Mutual is hiring a full-time Underwriter for its Specialty Business line in Nairobi. The role evaluates risk for specialized insurance classes and contributes to the growth of the Specialty portfolio through business retention, cross-selling and proactive engagement with intermediaries. The position is open to candidates with 3 years of specialized underwriting experience and an AIIK, ACII or equivalent qualification.

Key responsibilities

• Underwrite specialized risks across financial lines, bonds, trade credit, kidnap and ransom, keeping to company risk appetite and underwriting guidelines
• Structure customized insurance solutions and ensure risks are placed with the approved reinsurance panel
• Analyze portfolio performance and monitor industry trends, regulations and emerging risks
• Coordinate with reinsurers and cedants on facultative reinsurance for risks beyond treaty limits
• Prepare quotations, serve clients and intermediaries daily, and follow up with the Insurance Regulatory Authority for approvals where needed
• Serve business targets, train stakeholders and ensure bonds are cancelled on time
• Capture documentation such as premium obligations and submit periodic and monthly reports to management

Required profile

• 1st degree
• AIIK or ACII or an equivalent qualification
• 3 years' experience underwriting specialized classes
• Additional certifications in insurance or reinsurance management and operations preferred

• Strong understanding of underwriting principles and insurance products
• Written and verbal communication, problem solving and organization
• Ability to manage multiple underwriting submissions within strict timelines
