About the role

Reuters is seeking a dynamic Breaking News Correspondent to cover Sub‑Saharan Africa from Nairobi. You will join a fast‑paced newsroom, delivering real‑time headlines, updates and human‑interest stories that stand out across the region.

Key responsibilities

• Produce breaking news headlines, newsbreaks, sidebars and visually‑driven stories in real time.
• Cover major events across Southern Africa and other Sub‑Saharan countries, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
• Collaborate with text, video and picture teams to create coordinated, visually compelling coverage.
• Monitor multiple news sources, including social media, to identify political, economic and viral trends.
• Verify information quickly using digital newsgathering tools and emerging AI‑enabled workflows.

Required profile

• At least one year of experience in a fast‑paced breaking‑news environment.
• Proven ability to work under intense time pressure while maintaining accuracy.
• Fluent English; additional languages such as French, Spanish or Portuguese are a plus.
• Working knowledge of regional currency and stock markets.

Required skills

• Rapid processing of complex information.
• Strong news judgment and ability to filter multiple sources.
• Familiarity with digital newsgathering, verification techniques and social‑media monitoring.
