Deputy Head of Safety

About the role

The Deputy Head of Safety will support the Head of Safety in leading ALS Limited's aviation safety programme in Nairobi. This senior position is responsible for ensuring compliance with aviation safety legislation, driving Safety Management System (SMS) initiatives, and fostering a proactive safety culture across all operational areas.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System.
• Conduct risk assessments, safety investigations and root‑cause analyses.
• Lead internal and external safety audits and oversee corrective action plans.
• Coordinate safety programmes across flight operations, ground handling, engineering, cargo and training departments.
• Chair safety committees and promote a culture of safety awareness among staff.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of experience in aviation safety, including hands‑on work with legislation, SMS implementation, risk assessments and investigations.
• Academic background in Aviation Safety, Aeronautical Engineering, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Aviation Management, Occupational Safety & Health, or a related field.
• Completion of a Safety Management Systems course recognized by the aviation authority.
• Proven experience managing safety programmes in multi‑disciplinary operational environments.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of aviation safety regulations and standards.
• Experience with safety audits, corrective actions and safety investigations.
• Ability to lead safety committees and drive safety initiatives.
