Head of Credit and Risk

About the role

The Head of Credit and Risk will lead Phoenix Capital Limited’s credit approval, risk management and portfolio quality functions. Reporting to senior management, the role ensures disciplined lending while supporting growth across the Nairobi branches.

Key responsibilities

• Review, analyse and approve or decline credit applications in line with the Company’s Credit Policy and Lending Matrix.
• Assess borrowers’ financial capacity, repayment ability, collateral adequacy and overall creditworthiness.
• Develop, implement and continuously improve the Credit Risk Management Framework.
• Identify, monitor and mitigate credit, operational, collateral, fraud and portfolio risks.
• Maintain and update credit policies, lending procedures and the Lending Matrix.
• Monitor loan‑portfolio quality, analyse delinquency trends, NPLs and concentration risks, and produce risk reports for Executive Management.
• Oversee verification, perfection and custody of loan securities and conduct periodic collateral audits.
• Provide technical guidance to Branch Credit Officers and support branch credit oversight.

Required profile

• Mid‑level professional with at least 60 months (5 years) of experience in credit analysis and risk management.
• Strong knowledge of credit policies, lending matrices and risk tolerance frameworks.
• Proven ability to evaluate borrower financial statements, cash flows and collateral.
• Experience in portfolio monitoring, reporting and implementing risk mitigation strategies.
