Legal Consultant – International Environmental Law

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a Legal Consultant to support the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) in developing a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution. Based at the INC Secretariat in Nairobi, the consultant will work under the Executive Secretary and the Senior Legal Adviser, providing high‑quality legal and procedural advice.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal and procedural support to the INC for the drafting and negotiation of the international instrument on plastic pollution.
• Conduct research on substantive and procedural legal questions related to environmental treaties.
• Prepare in‑session documents, including draft texts and legal analyses.
• Offer authoritative advice on UNEP’s mandate, legal status, and governance framework.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in law (LL.M. or equivalent) with specialization in environmental or international law.
• Demonstrated experience in treaty negotiation, multilateral environmental agreements, or related legal advisory roles.
• Strong analytical and drafting skills, with ability to work under tight deadlines.
