About the role
Reuters is seeking an experienced and highly organised editorial leader to oversee the deployment of journalists, equipment and technology for breaking and daily news coverage across Sub‑Saharan Africa. The role ensures cohesive, high‑impact journalism across text, video and pictures by aligning field operations with editorial priorities.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate field deployment of journalists and logistics for breaking news coverage across Sub‑Saharan Africa.
- Work with newsroom leaders to determine staffing levels that match the ambition and scope of coverage.
- Maintain high editorial and visual standards by collaborating with staff and freelance photographers and the Global Director of Photography.
- Provide feedback, mentorship and talent development to foster a strong photographic culture.
- Lead cross‑format planning for major news events, ensuring cohesive execution across text, video and pictures.
- Utilise planning tools to keep accurate, client‑ready coverage calendars and communicate with clients in real time.
- Collaborate with commercial, product and editorial safety teams to improve planning systems and workflows.
- Manage deployment costs within agreed budgets and anticipate resource needs for developing stories.
Required profile
- Strong editorial judgement and operational decision‑making under pressure.
- Deep understanding of visual workflows and newsroom technologies.
- Excellent photography and photo‑editing skills with knowledge of the latest photojournalism tools.
- Outstanding communication, collaboration and interpersonal abilities.
- Familiarity with newsroom safety protocols and planning workflows.
- Proven track record in senior planning, production or coordination roles in fast‑paced newsrooms.
- Commitment to Reuters Trust Principles of independence, integrity and freedom from bias.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor, develop and retain talent.
- Strong knowledge of Africa and experience working in hostile or challenging environments.
