Release of Information Specialist – Mon‑Fri 8am‑4:30pm

About the role

The Release of Information (ROI) Specialist internship supports the VitalChart department in handling medical‑record requests from healthcare clients. Working Monday to Friday, 8:00 am‑4:30 pm, you will ensure each request is processed accurately, promptly, and in full compliance with HIPAA and other applicable statutes.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, validate and prioritize Continuing Care and Disability Determination Service requests.
• Verify patient authorizations and ensure they meet federal and state privacy regulations.
• Retrieve required portions of electronic or physical medical charts and upload them to the ROI system.
• Perform quality‑control checks to prevent unauthorized disclosure of protected health information.
• Log each request, classify its type, and adjust invoicing as needed.
• Communicate any quality, connectivity, or client concerns to the ROI Area Manager or Team Leader.
• Reject non‑compliant requests and return physical records to their proper location.

Required profile

• Strong attention to detail and ability to work under tight turnaround times.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Basic understanding of medical‑record terminology and privacy regulations.
• Ability to follow standard operating procedures and maintain accurate logs.

Required skills

• HIPAA compliance knowledge.
• Experience with ROI software or similar medical‑record management tools.
• Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
