Senior Mechanical Engineer – Nairobi CAA Project

About the role

The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to provide full‑range engineering and construction quality assurance for the Nairobi Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) project. This 36‑month fixed‑term position will oversee technical inspections, contractor performance, and compliance with U.S. codes and standard building practices.

Key responsibilities

• Perform technical inspections of mechanical work and monitor the contractor’s quality‑control program.
• Review project drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and submittals to ensure compliance with design documents and contract requirements.
• Observe onsite construction, verify proper installation of mechanical elements, and identify non‑compliance issues.
• Prepare weekly progress reports, construction reports, and recommendations based on field inspections.
• Evaluate contractor‑proposed remedies, formulate solutions, and coordinate with the Project Director/Construction Manager.
• Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs), evaluate design calculations, and develop Independent Government Estimates for change orders.

Required profile

• Professional Mechanical Engineer with extensive experience in construction quality assurance and project oversight.
• Strong knowledge of applicable U.S. codes, standard building practices, and engineering design principles.
• Proven ability to interpret engineering drawings and coordinate across multiple disciplines.
• Excellent analytical skills for reviewing calculations, submittals, and contract documents.
