Senior Scientist – Land and Forest Tenure Reforms

About the role

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is looking for a senior scientist to provide scientific leadership on land and forest tenure reforms. The role involves shaping research concepts, guiding methodological approaches, and representing the institute in national, regional and global forums on forest governance.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance ensuring research meets the highest standards and reflects up‑to‑date methods.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators and leaders to define and implement research activities in emerging interest areas.
• Write, supervise and disseminate scientific publications and communications.
• Lead and supervise project capacity‑building initiatives, including mentoring junior scientists and supervising students.
• Represent CIFOR in relevant forums and develop constructive partnerships with stakeholders.
• Identify and secure additional funding, develop budgets and monitor financial aspects of research projects.
• Coordinate donor reporting and ensure compliance with reporting requirements.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., natural resource management, social sciences).
• Extensive experience in collaborative natural resource management or social‑science research, preferably across multiple regions.
• Proven track record of budget management and successful resource mobilisation for research projects.
• Strong publication record in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Fluent spoken and written English; additional international language(s) an advantage.
• Demonstrated ability to work with multiple partners and conduct fieldwork in developing countries.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a commitment to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
