Deputy Team Leader – East Africa Border Security Programme

About the role

The Deputy Team Leader will support the Team Leader in delivering the East Africa Border Security Programme, a UK‑FCDO funded initiative that aims to disrupt human trafficking and smuggling networks across the region’s land borders. Based in Nairobi, the role combines strategic programme oversight with operational coordination across multiple countries.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Team Leader in shaping programme strategy, research agenda and learning framework.
• Oversee implementation of interventions across outcome areas, ensuring technical robustness and alignment with work‑plan and budget.
• Manage BSP Country Leads and coordinate with consortium partners to maintain coherent delivery.
• Supervise the MRELA Manager to establish monitoring systems, generate evidence and support adaptive management.
• Maintain strategic relationships with national governments, donors and other stakeholders, providing regular updates on progress and impact.
• Act as the Team Leader’s deputy, ensuring continuity of programme activities during absences.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in programme management within humanitarian or development contexts.
• Demonstrated ability to work with multi‑country teams and external partners.
• Strong understanding of migration, border security and anti‑trafficking issues.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
