Head of Tax

About the role

The Head of Tax – EBKL is the strategic owner of the bank’s tax governance, risk appetite and regulatory posture. Reporting to the Head of Finance and functionally to the Group Chief Tax, Regulatory & Sustainability Officer, the role leads the execution of the Group tax strategy within EBKL and acts as the primary interface on tax matters with senior management, regulators, auditors and external stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement tax strategy and policy across the organisation.
• Provide transaction and business advisory on tax implications.
• Oversee tax compliance, reporting and disclosure requirements.
• Manage tax risk, controls and escalation thresholds.
• Monitor and communicate tax law, policy and regulatory developments and coordinate implementation.
• Lead stakeholder management with regulators, auditors and senior leadership.
• Coach, develop and succession‑plan the EBKL tax team, enhancing technical and leadership capability.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in law, business, finance, accounting or related discipline.
• Professional qualification such as CPA, ACCA or equivalent.
• Minimum 10 years post‑qualification tax experience, including at least 5 years in a senior management role within a financial institution or top‑tier advisory firm.
• Proven experience leading complex tax audits, disputes and litigation with revenue authorities.
• Strong understanding of domestic, regional and international tax issues relevant to Kenya’s financial‑services sector.
• Demonstrated ability to apply tax knowledge to commercial decisions and manage acceptable tax risk.
