Design Engineer

About the role

Safal Group is hiring a full-time, on-site Design Engineer in Nairobi. The engineer develops engineering designs, prepares technical drawings, carries out design calculations and reviews specifications so that projects meet quality, safety and industry standards. The position is middle level and requires a degree in Engineering or a related field.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, review and coordinate civil, structural and building designs for modular projects, and prepare calculations, design reports, structural and fabrication drawings, technical specifications and Bills of Quantities.
• Carry out structural analysis and design optimisation, and develop solutions for steel structures, light-gauge steel systems, modular buildings and prefabricated construction.
• Coordinate civil, structural, architectural, mechanical and electrical interfaces and ensure compliance with building codes, standards and approved specifications.
• Review design assumptions, loading criteria, material specifications, connections and foundations, and coordinate design reviews with the Design Manager.
• Maintain design calculations, drawing registers, revision histories and design change documentation, and support manufacturing, procurement, site teams, customers and contractors.
• Identify opportunities for standardisation, design reuse, material optimisation and value engineering.
• Manage engineering projects from initiation through design, execution, commissioning and handover, including plans, schedules, budgets, risk registers and progress reports.
• Monitor project progress, costs and resources, coordinate engineering inputs to procurement, and share technical knowledge and lessons learned.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Construction Engineering or a closely related discipline; a Master's degree is an added advantage.
• Registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK); membership of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) or an equivalent body is desirable; professional engineer registration is advantageous.
• At least 3 years of relevant engineering experience and 2 years in engineering design, project execution and site coordination or management.
• Experience delivering projects from concept and detailed design through manufacturing coordination, construction, commissioning and handover.
• Desirable: experience in remote-site projects, manufacturing-led or offsite construction, modular buildings, light-gauge steel construction, value engineering and design optimisation.
