Director of Finance & Capital

About the role

Natural State is seeking a Director of Finance & Capital to join its Senior Leadership Team in Nairobi. The role combines overall financial stewardship of the organisation’s nonprofit entities with the strategic development and financing of new conservation ventures.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and mentor the finance team in Nanyuki, creating professional development plans.
• Ensure accuracy, integrity and timeliness of financial management, reporting and compliance for all affiliated entities (US 501(c)(3), Kenyan entity and future entities).
• Own budgeting and long‑range planning, develop multi‑year financial models and cash‑flow forecasts.
• Conduct monthly budget‑vs‑actual analysis and enforce spending controls.
• Design and enforce internal controls, procurement policies and financial risk‑management frameworks.
• Oversee donor‑grant stewardship, audit and tax compliance in both jurisdictions.
• Represent the organisation to auditors, banks and major donors.
• Provide strategic financial analysis to senior leadership and support legal and insurance matters.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in financial leadership for nonprofit or mission‑driven organisations.
• Proven ability to manage multi‑entity financial reporting and compliance across jurisdictions.
• Strong track record of budgeting, long‑term financial planning and cash‑flow management.
• Experience developing and implementing internal controls and risk‑management frameworks.
• Ability to work closely with development, partnership and legal teams on capital initiatives.
