District Veterinary Medical Officer

About the role

The District Veterinary Medical Officer provides veterinary expertise to ensure compliance with federal guidelines, regulations, and humane handling practices within assigned facilities. This position supports both internal staff and external stakeholders by interpreting policies and delivering actionable recommendations.

Key responsibilities

• Interpret and analyze federal guidelines and regulations related to veterinary and animal welfare.
• Implement policies and provide personnel support to ensure compliance.
• Conduct research, investigations, and make judgments with recommendations.
• Foster working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Communicate guidelines and processes to plant personnel.
• Draft recommendations, reports, and guidance documents.
• Apply veterinary medical concepts, principles, and practices.
• Perform onsite humane handling and good commercial practices verification activities.

Required profile

• U.S. citizen or national; males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
• Successful background investigation, fingerprint check, and E‑Verify verification.
• Completion of a one‑year probationary period (unless previously served).
• Direct deposit required for federal payments.
• Ability to read, speak, write, and effectively communicate in English.
• Training as a condition of employment must begin within 90 days and be completed within 12 months.
• Successful completion of a pre‑employment medical examination.
