Freelance Encryption, Backup & Disaster Recovery Engineer

About the role

This freelance contract is for a senior‑level engineer who will design, implement and maintain enterprise‑wide encryption, backup and disaster‑recovery solutions. You will work independently, analysing the current environment, configuring platforms, troubleshooting issues and performing regular recovery tests.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and manage encryption at rest policies across databases, filesystems, virtual and cloud infrastructures.
• Administer centralized key management systems (e.g., CipherTrust Manager) and hardware security modules such as Luna HSM.
• Configure, monitor and troubleshoot enterprise backup solutions including Veeam Backup & Replication, Dell Avamar and Data Domain.
• Conduct recurring restore tests, manage retention, deduplication and immutable backup repositories.
• Design, deploy and maintain continuous data protection and disaster‑recovery architectures using Zerto or comparable technologies.
• Execute planned failover/failback exercises, validate RTO/RPO targets and support ransomware‑resilient recovery scenarios.
• Collaborate with virtualization and storage teams (VMware vSphere/ESXi, Hyper‑V, SAN/NAS) to ensure infrastructure readiness.

Required profile

• Proven senior‑level experience in enterprise encryption, backup and DR environments.
• Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision and deliver end‑to‑end solutions.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills for production issue resolution.
• Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as SOC 2, PCI DSS or HIPAA is a plus.
