General-Purpose Tractor Operator (MFWD 120-140 HP)
Tana River Sugar Company
Job description
About the role
Tana River Sugar Company is looking for four General-Purpose Tractor Operators to run medium-power tractor work on its expanding sugarcane estate. You will drive 120-140 HP MFWD tractors fitted with tipping trailers, gypsum applicators and other approved implements, carrying out amendment haulage, light field haulage and gypsum application while keeping equipment in good condition.
Key responsibilities
- Operate 120-140 HP MFWD tractors with tipping trailers and gypsum applicators for land preparation, soil amendment application, material haulage and estate development.
- Tow tipping trailers with flotation tires across soft, muddy and partially formed fields, keeping loading, transport, tipping and return cycles safe and efficient.
- Run the gypsum applicator to the planned application rate, with accurate calibration, consistent flow and uniform coverage.
- Adjust speed, gear, applicator settings and material flow to soil conditions, terrain and agronomic needs.
- Coordinate with Agronomy, Land Development, Logistics, loaders and excavator operators.
- Support fleet productivity so higher-horsepower tractors can focus on primary land preparation and cultivation.
- Carry out pre-start checks of the tractor, trailer, applicator, PTO, hydraulics, tires, brakes and lighting; safely couple and uncouple trailers and implements.
- Drive safely on soft ground, monitor loads and report defects to the maintenance team.
- Clean and inspect machinery after handling gypsum, track fuel use and operating hours, and keep daily records of hectares, trips, application rates, fuel and breakdowns.
- Report issues to the Equipment Operations Supervisor, take part in toolbox talks and follow HSE and traffic management rules.
Required profile
- NTSA Class G12 valid heavy agricultural equipment operator licence.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience operating agricultural tractors, preferably 120 HP or above.
- Experience towing heavy agricultural or tipping trailers in commercial farming, plantations, quarries or earthworks.
- Ability to drive safely on soft, uneven, muddy and partially prepared ground.
- Added advantage: experience with gypsum, fertilizer, lime or manure applicators, and with large-scale sugarcane or land development.
Required skills
- Understanding of tractor mechanics, safe towing, trailer braking and weight distribution.
- Proficiency with implement PTO systems.
- Basic knowledge of soil amendments, application rates and flotation tires on soft ground.
