Group Financial Controller

About the role

Canonical is seeking a Group Financial Controller to lead risk‑based controls, policy development and financial reporting across the organisation. The role is home‑based within EMEA time zones, with the option to work from our London office, and reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement controls to mitigate risks in processes and systems.
• Lead improvement of policies and procedures to support scalable growth.
• Drive implementation and compliance monitoring of Canonical’s policies.
• Support multi‑functional change projects to enhance systems, processes and data accuracy.
• Oversee weekly, month‑end and year‑end financial close activities, including balance‑sheet reconciliations, management accounts and statutory reporting.
• Maintain robust accounting records and ensure accurate financial data recording.
• Manage external audits and ensure compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks.
• Lead finance system upgrades and sensible AI adoption.
• Develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders and resolve issues confidentially.
• Mentor junior accounting staff and promote best practices.

Required profile

• Exceptional academic record and professional qualification in Accounting or Finance (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA or equivalent).
• Extensive practical IFRS knowledge and experience.
• Advanced Excel and strong data‑analysis capabilities.
• Excellent attention to detail, organisational skills and ability to meet tight deadlines.
• Confident communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with colleagues, management and external parties.
• Proactive, analytical mindset with a passion for continuous improvement.
• Proven experience using enterprise‑level ERP systems.
• Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events.
