Intern – Programme (Coastal & Ocean Resilience) – Mombasa

About the role

The IUCN Coastal and Ocean Resilience (COR) Programme in Kenya is seeking an intern to support its work in Mombasa. The role will contribute to the Great Blue Wall initiative, helping to protect and restore mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass beds while building climate‑resilient livelihoods.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in data collection, monitoring and reporting for marine protected areas and co‑management projects.
• Support the preparation of briefing notes, policy briefs and communication material on coastal ecosystem restoration.
• Contribute to stakeholder engagement activities, including workshops and community outreach.
• Help maintain project databases and update GIS layers related to mangrove, coral and seagrass mapping.
• Provide logistical support for field visits and field‑based surveys.

Required profile

• Current enrolment in a university programme related to environmental science, marine biology, geography or a similar field.
• Strong interest in marine conservation, climate adaptation and blue‑economy initiatives.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Required skills

• Basic knowledge of marine ecosystems and coastal management concepts.
• Familiarity with data entry, spreadsheet software and GIS tools is an advantage.
