Senior Backend Engineer – AI‑Native

About the role

Umba is a pan‑African digital bank building intelligent, automated financial products. We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer who will design, develop, and scale the core services that power our platform, while working in an AI‑native development environment.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain high‑performance backend services using Python, Flask and FastAPI.
• Contribute to front‑end features with NextJS and assist across the full stack when needed.
• Define clear technical specifications that can be executed by AI‑assisted development workflows.
• Leverage AI tools such as Claude Code and Codex to accelerate coding while ensuring quality.
• Review, test, and harden AI‑generated code for security, correctness and performance.
• Architect systems with a focus on reliability, observability and scalability.
• Build robust testing pipelines (unit, integration, automated QA) and debug complex production issues.

Required profile

• 5+ years of production‑grade software engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency in Python and backend frameworks (Flask, FastAPI).
• Experience working with AI‑assisted development tools or LLM‑based code generation.
• Ability to work onsite in Nairobi, collaborate closely with data and product teams, and take ownership of features end‑to‑end.
