Senior Developer (Consultant) – Web Platforms

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a Senior Developer consultant to support the ongoing modernization of its web platforms during a six‑month part‑time assignment. Working eight days per month on‑site in Nairobi, you will address complex technical issues, ensure continuity of critical systems, and transfer knowledge to the incoming replacement and the Web Platforms team.

Key responsibilities

• Provide senior technical advice and troubleshooting for the corporate website, UNEP Starter Kit, and priority platform migrations.
• Review architecture, code, and configurations for high‑risk changes and guide developers on corrective actions.
• Support major releases and migrations, focusing on security, performance, integrations, and rollback plans.
• Coach the designated replacement and develop practical Drupal training and operations manuals.
• Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for UNEP’s Drupal environment.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience).
• Minimum five years of progressive web development experience, with senior‑level expertise in PHP and Drupal.
• Proven experience leading technical work on complex, multi‑site digital platforms.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work in a multicultural, international environment.

Required skills

• Drupal architecture, themes, modules, configuration, and reusable components.
• PHP, JavaScript, React, Next.js.
• API design and integration.
• Enterprise search technologies such as OpenSearch or Elasticsearch.
• Git, code review, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment workflows.
• Security, accessibility, performance, and maintainability standards for web platforms.
