Senior Legal Counsel - Corporate

About the role

Sanlam is hiring a Senior Legal Counsel for its Corporate division in Nairobi, Kenya. The role provides independent legal advice and support to the Legal department so that the Company's interests are safeguarded while complying with current laws and regulations. It is a full-time, on-site position.

Key responsibilities

• Manage non-claims litigation: instruct external lawyers, review correspondence and opinions, prepare witnesses, manage external counsel SLAs and fees, and recommend settlements, mediation, arbitration or litigation.
• Manage legal risk: identify and assess legal and regulatory risks, develop mitigation strategies aligned with the Company's risk appetite, maintain the Legal Risk Register and review legal provisions.
• Manage contracts: draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts, oversee their execution and maintain the contract management system.
• Provide legal advice: monitor changes in laws and regulations, interpret legal developments, advise management on business impacts and draft advisory memos.
• Handle conveyancing: lease and tenancy negotiations, due diligence, registration at registries, manage external conveyancing counsel and maintain the Conveyance Register.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from an accredited university and a Post Graduate Diploma (Dip KSL) from the Kenya School of Law.
• Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a current practicing certificate.
• At least five years of post-admission experience in a top-tier private law firm or a reputable financial institution or organization, specializing in civil litigation and corporate advisory; experience in a general insurance company is highly preferred.
