Senior Programme Manager, East Africa – Scaling Innovation

About the role

The Senior Programme Manager will support R4D’s delivery of the Science, Technology Acceleration – Systems (STA‑S) programme in Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania. The role focuses on strengthening innovation institutions and coordinating a portfolio of activities funded by the UK FCDO, with an initial full‑time commitment through March 2027.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a 2‑day ecosystem alignment workshop for Kenyan innovation leaders and develop an impact framework.
• Facilitate a 4‑day International Development Innovation Alliance (IDIA) training for a cohort of ecosystem actors.
• Provide technical support to the Kenyan Innovation Agency (KeNIA) and the Innovation Agencies of Africa network.
• Engage continuously with the FCDO Programme Funded Post to strengthen the Ministry of Science, Technology, Research and Innovation.
• Co‑design and support the Kenya Network of Entrepreneurial Institution Leaders (NEIL) to operate effectively.
• Strengthen the Kenyan Innovation Ecosystem Funders Forum (KIEFF), including designing a MEL system and collaborating on an ecosystem data dashboard.
• Coordinate R4D’s innovation activities across East Africa to ensure high‑quality, timely delivery.

Required profile

• Proven experience managing complex innovation or development programmes in East Africa.
• Strong understanding of science, technology and innovation (STI) ecosystems and stakeholder coordination.
• Ability to work with government ministries, funding forums, and international donors.
• Excellent communication and facilitation skills for workshops and training sessions.
