Strategy Associate – Sustainable Finance

About the role

Systemiq is seeking a Strategy Associate to join its Sustainable Finance practice in Kenya. The role supports governments and public finance institutions in developing financing strategies for climate, nature, and development priorities.

Key responsibilities

• Support or lead workstreams delivering advisory services on public and development finance for climate and nature outcomes.
• Develop structured analysis and client‑ready materials such as strategy decks, technical notes, and briefing packs.
• Drive the development of sovereign financing strategies, considering macroeconomic context, sovereign risk, debt sustainability and credit dynamics.
• Design and assess financing approaches and instruments, including concessional and blended finance, sustainability‑linked bonds/loans, and debt‑for‑climate/nature swaps.
• Engage stakeholders across ministries, debt management offices, central banks, IFIs/DFIs, donors and private sector partners through workshops and convenings.
• Contribute to proposal development, thought leadership and knowledge building within the team.

Required profile

• Degree or Masters in Economics, Finance, International Development or related field.
• 2–5+ years of relevant experience in strategy consulting, international financial institutions, central banks, sovereign research, finance ministries or development finance advisory.
• Familiarity with sovereign financing landscape, including concessional, blended finance and climate‑related instruments.
• Strong analytical, research and problem‑solving abilities with excellent written and verbal English communication.
• Demonstrated stakeholder engagement skills and ability to deliver high‑quality work under tight deadlines.
• Collaborative team player with an entrepreneurial mindset and strong mission alignment.

Required skills

• Financial modelling and analysis.
• Knowledge of sustainability‑linked bonds, blended finance structures and debt‑for‑climate/nature swaps.
