Trial Attorney – Camp Lejeune Justice Act Unit

About the role

The Department of Justice’s Civil Division, Torts Branch, Camp Lejeune Unit is seeking a Trial Attorney to defend the United States in the nation’s largest mass toxic‑tort litigation under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022. This role offers exposure to complex fact and expert discovery, interaction with scientific and medical experts, and high‑visibility litigation before federal, state, and administrative courts.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and conduct hearings, settlement negotiations, and trials of complex toxic‑tort cases.
• Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents based on thorough factual and legal research.
• Participate in pre‑trial and pre‑hearing conferences and present oral arguments in federal, state, and administrative proceedings.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior trial attorneys.
• Handle appellate litigation, including statutory construction matters related to the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.
• Review and analyze case facts, develop evidence, and coordinate with scientific and medical expert witnesses.
• Collaborate with the Department of Justice Civil Appellate Section and the Department of the Navy on related appellate and administrative claims.

Required profile

• Experience with complex civil litigation, including fact and expert discovery, motion practice, and trial advocacy.
• Familiarity with toxic‑tort matters and the ability to work with scientific and medical experts.
• Ability to conduct oral arguments and negotiate settlements in federal and state courts.
• Experience advising junior attorneys and handling appellate issues.
